The interaction of fluid status and residual renal function in peritoneal dialysis patients
نویسندگان
چکیده
Introduction It has been documented that preservation of residual renal function (RRF) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients could improve the quality of life as well as survival. To preserve RRF, different protective methods have been put into practice, such as sodium restriction, avoidance of nephrotoxic agents, use of reninangiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibition, and use of biocompatible solutions and so on. And well-protected RRF will contribute to a better control of fluid status. Fluid status of PD patients has been proved to play a role in the protection of RRF. Some clinicians proposed to keep PD patients overhydration in order to slow down the decline of RRF, while others hold different opinions. This article will review the evidence linking RRF and fluid status in PD patients, and discuss which kind of fluid status is more profitable to the preservation of RRF. Conclusion Optimal fluid status may lead to a better protection of RRF and achieve appropriate hydration management in return. Also the preserved RRF is helpful to maintain the optimal fluid status.

Background & Objective: According to the World Health Organization (WHO) definition, quality of life is a state of complete physical, mental, and social health not merely the absence of the disease. End stage renal disease and its treatment affect patients' quality of life. Therefore, the present study surveyed the quality of life in renal transplant recipients, hemodialysis, and peritoneal di...

The well-being and survival of dialysis patients not only depend on the removal of waste products and excess fluid, but also on the prevention of cardiovascular complications by maintaining normovolaemia and adequate blood pressure and avoidance of ectopic calcification. Also, the maintenance of nutritional status and adequate removal of middle molecules are amongst the most important issues in...
متن کاملComparative Analysis of Serum Levels of Aluminum and Lead in Dialysis Patients, Pre and post Dialysis
Background: Accumulation or deficiency of trace elements can occur in hemodialysis patients and it increases risk of cardiovascular or other organs disorders. Special ions levels such as sodium and bicarbonate in dialysis fluid are accurately regulated but the remaining elements are not regularly measured. Aluminum and lead belong to the biologic performance free heavy metals .They also has a t...
متن کاملSpirometric Parameters: Hemodialysis Compared to Peritoneal Dialysis
Introduction: Renal failure affects the mechanical and the ventilatory function of the lungs. A few studies have evaluated the ventilatory and pulmonary function in dialysis patients. The present study aimed to compare Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) results in patients undergoing Hemodialysis (HD) and Peritoneal Dialysis (PD). Materials and Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study on 50 pa...
